What valuable knowledge can I expect my child to gain?

Department Vision Statement

KS3 & 4

KS3: Our PE curriculum, complimented by our enrichment programme aims to ensure that all pupils develop and engage in PE by providing a broad & balanced curriculum with opportunities for all to enjoy. The content we deliver focuses on educating students all about a variety of sports and  exercise, from rules to techniques right through to how to take up a sport in their own time. This will ensure they become knowledgable performers with the ability to demonstrate the fundamental skills and competence needed to excel in a wide range of physical activities and have the confidence to seek further participation outside of school and into adult life. Our PE curriculum develops physical literacy "Physical literacy is the motivation, confidence, physical competence, knowledge, and understanding to value and take responsibility for engagement in physical activities for life." - The International Physical Literacy Association, May 2014 and will allow pupils to learn about themselves, the importance of a healthy lifestyle, self-expression and concepts such as fair play and respect. It also contributes to the development of a range of important cognitive skills such as decision making and analysis, and social skills such as teamwork and communication. Our PE curriculum from Y7 to Y9 is designed so that it gradually progresses students' ability to apply skills learnt effectively in performance (the focus of the PE National Curriculum) in order for students to become fully equipped for the next steps in thier sporting lives.

KS4: Our mission in Y10 & Y11 is to improve and increase the participation and enjoyment of our students in sport and exercise. We want to show them how PE can enhance thier attainment, achievement and wellbeing to create pathways for them to continue to be active beyond school and into adult life. Developing studentl’s personal qualities through PE can affect their attitudes towards school and learning. We want to develop students personal qualities such as a strong desire to learn & make progress, high levels of dedication, attendance and involvement, good levels of positive behaviour such as politeness, fair play and helpfulness and high levels of enjoyment and enthusiasm with a strong desire to get involved. The content we deliver focusses heavily on leadership, cohesiveness, competition and working as part of a team. All important elements within the world of work or further  study.

Exam Groups

GCSE & A Level: Our knowledge rich GCSE and A Level courses focus on teaching students at greater depths about the physiological, psychological and social factors involved and the effects these have on performance. Our courses are weighted more towards the academic elements of PE rather than the practical elements with a 60/40 split at GCSE and a 70/30 split at A Level. The theoretical element of both courses provide students with information at increasing complexities in order to prepare them for the next stage of study in Physical Education. Our curriculum is designed heavily around low stakes quizzing at AO1 level to improve recall and retention with many opportunities built in periodically for purposeful practice in increasing responses right through AO2 and into AO3. Students develop thier thought processes around physical education and improve thier ability to evaluate and consider other viewpoints from various perspectives when providing more in depth responses. Practically students experience a more heavy curriculum of tactics, complex rules and set plays in order to reach a higher level of performance. Our activity base becomes narrower to allow far more in depth study of each sport. Students will gain opportunities to lead and officiate in sport both within and outside of lessons as part of the wider school community, developing confidence and communication skills.

Vocational: Our Vocational course provides students with a wider study of sport, teaching students many transferrable skills through practical means. The course takes a more sector based focus, ensuring students have the experience necessary to step into a sports based career or further study. Students will develop knowledge around contemporary issues in sport such as ethics and funding and develop an appreciation of the importance of sport locally and nationally. The course opens the doors to the sporting industry and provides students with the skills needed to work within it. Sports Leadership is a crucial component of the course where students gain confidence, knowledge and practice of both officiating and coaching and will contribute these skills to the wider school community, especially through primary competitions.

Y10 & Y11

Physical education plays an important role in Penistone Grammar School achieving excellence through a value driven education. It is at the forefront in developing student well-being, life skills and preparing students to lead healthy, positive, and active lifestyles in the future. In KS4 PE is less about the of teaching independent skills but more how the sport and physical activity can be played in a social situation to increase the likelihood of a healthy active lifestyle. At KS4 our curriculum allows student choice and engagement to increase the engagement within physical education and activity.
