Why Choose Penistone Grammar School?

A message from the Principal, Paul Crook

Our students are amazing, and they deserve nothing less than a first-class education that inspires them to achieve more than they believe is possible. At Penistone Grammar School we recognise and value the contribution each member of staff makes in delivering this promise for our young people. Our school is a positive, welcoming, happy place to learn and to work. This is directly attributable to the collaborative interaction and support between colleagues, which is complemented by their commitment to do all they can for the benefit of each and every one of our students; inside, outside and beyond the classroom. Put quite simply, we owe everything we are to our staff.

PGS continues to be consistently over-subscribed with our growth over the last four-years seeing pupil numbers increase from 1600 to almost 2000. Our Post-16 Centre is more popular than ever before, securing its place as one of the top 10% of providers nationally, and we continue to evolve, developing and innovating to introduce new practice and aspects of education that support our students’ learning, such as the introduction of our SEND specialist provision, The HeartSpace. Can you make a difference to the lives of young people? If you believe you can add value to the lives of our children, we’re excited to hear from you.

Sarah Wood

I have worked in education for 12 years and have a wealth of primary teaching experience, subject leadership responsibilities, and a background in safeguarding and SEND provision, I am deeply passionate about the holistic development of young people. This passion is what drives my desire to become a parent school governor. My time in the classroom has given me a thorough understanding of the challenges and opportunities that schools face in delivering high-quality education. As a subject leader, I have honed my skills in curriculum design and assessment, always striving to ensure that students of all abilities can access and thrive within a broad, balanced, and inclusive curriculum. I understand the importance of data-driven decisions, fostering a love of learning, and creating environments where every child can achieve their full potential.  In my role as a Deputy Safeguarding Lead, I have gained critical insights into safeguarding procedures and the importance of creating safe, supportive environments for students. I’ve worked closely with students, parents, and external agencies to ensure the well-being of every child, especially those who may be vulnerable. This experience has taught me to look at school life through a wider lens, recognizing that education goes far beyond academic achievement. As a SENDCo, I have the privilege of advocating for children with special educational needs, ensuring that they receive the tailored support they require. I work collaboratively with teachers, parents, and other professionals to develop and implement strategies that remove barriers to learning, making education more inclusive for all. I believe my background gives me a unique perspective that would be highly beneficial to the governing board. I am well-versed in the complexities of school life, from day-to-day teaching to strategic planning, safeguarding, and SEND provision. I would be honoured to work alongside other governors to contribute to the continued success of the school, ensuring that it remains a safe, inclusive, and inspiring place where every child can flourish. By serving as a parent school governor, I aim to use my experience to support the school’s leadership in making well-informed decisions that prioritize the well-being, achievement, and development of all students.

I am interested in becoming a governor because I have a deep passion for supporting children, especially those who face academic and personal challenges. Coming from Penistone and having been raised in council estates, I understand first hand the barriers that many local children experience. My family’s experiences with neurodivergence, my daughter with dyslexia (possible ADHD), my wife as a nurse and myself both neurodivergent —have further ignited my commitment to ensuring that all children, regardless of their challenges, receive the best educational opportunities and support.  I bring extensive leadership experience from both the private and public sectors, having spent over 20 years in senior roles that demanded strategic thinking, operational leadership, and a focus on continuous improvement. My background in the NHS and healthcare sector, particularly in delivering staffing solutions and managing large-scale operations, has given me a deep understanding of how to navigate complex systems, build effective teams, and optimise services while maintaining compliance and regulatory standards. These skills would be highly beneficial in supporting the governing body’s objectives, particularly in areas such as resource management, stakeholder engagement, and strategic planning.  My ability to lead through change, foster team growth, and drive innovation in technology can help improve processes within the school environment. Additionally, my personal connection with the local MP gives me insight into policy-making and could aid in advocating for better educational resources and support for students facing financial, mental, or physical challenges.  In summary, I am committed to using my skills and experiences to contribute to the development of a supportive, inclusive, and successful school environment that allows every child to reach their full potential.
